How to pull off a surprise wedding dance without it turning into chaos
The surprise dance is one of those moments that, when it goes well, becomes the video everyone forwards the next day. But it's also one of the extras that can most easily go wrong if it isn't prepared carefully. Here's how I organize it so it comes off well.
Deciding who takes part, and when it stops being a secret
The first thing is to decide whether the surprise dance is prepared by the couple for the guests, by the guests for the couple, or both separately. From there, you need to clearly mark the date from which it stops being a surprise for the people who have to rehearse it, because someone has to coordinate it.
Choosing the song (or songs) well
The choreographies that work best usually combine two or three different songs with clear changes of pace, so the dance has an arc: it starts calm, surprises with a change, and ends with the liveliest, most participative part.
The moment within the night
I never put it at the start of the party, because people aren't loose enough yet to join in. It works better after dinner, once there's already an atmosphere, but before the dance floor has been going for too many hours and people are tired.
Coordinating with the DJ on the day of the event
The critical point is the entry cue: who gives the signal, with what phrase or gesture, and at exactly what moment I come in with the music. We go through it together before the event so there are no doubts or awkward silences.
What to do if something doesn't go as planned
Over the years I've learned that it almost never comes out exactly as rehearsed, and that's fine: people enjoy it just as much, or more, when they see the couple (or the guests) having a good time even if they lose their place for a second. My job is to make sure the music never cuts out and no technical glitch shows, no matter what happens on the dance floor.
If you're preparing a surprise dance for your wedding, tell me about the idea ahead of time and we'll coordinate it together so that on the wedding day all you have to do is enjoy it.
Want to talk about your event?
Tell me the date, the venue and what you need, and I'll put together a tailored proposal. No fixed rates.
