How to hire a DJ for your event: quick guide
A lot of people write to me who have never hired a DJ before and aren't sure where to start. Here's a quick guide with what I'd tell anyone thinking about hiring a DJ for their wedding, corporate party or private party.
What to ask before hiring a DJ
- Do they work alone or with a team? Know who will actually be behind the decks on the day.
- Do they bring their own sound and lighting equipment? Or does that need to be hired separately.
- How do they adapt the music to the crowd? A good DJ doesn't play a fixed playlist — they read the dance floor live.
- What happens if the event runs long? Worth knowing in advance.
How far in advance to book
For weddings, it's common to close the DJ booking 6 to 12 months ahead, especially in high season (spring-summer). For a corporate party or a private party, 1-2 months is usually enough, though it's always better to plan early if you already have a date in mind.
What's usually included
When someone asks me how to hire a DJ, the first thing I explain is what's included in the quote: sound equipment, lighting, the full music session and, depending on the event, extras like microphones for speeches, the "crazy hour" or musical bingo. I always work with tailor-made quotes, no fixed rates, because every event has different needs.
Weddings, corporate events and private parties: what changes
Hiring a DJ for a wedding (with ceremony, cocktail, dinner and party) isn't the same as for a corporate event (where speeches and ambience usually matter more) or for a private party at home or at a campsite, where people usually want something more informal and flexible, with the option of adding karaoke or musical bingo to get every guest involved.
How to request a quote
Tell me the date, the venue and the type of event (wedding, corporate, private party, birthday...) and I'll put together a proposal tailored to what you need, no obligation. That's how I've worked for 22 years: every quote built for that specific event.
