How to choose the perfect DJ for your wedding: key questions

Weddings · 2026-09-21

Choosing a DJ is one of the decisions that most shapes how a wedding is experienced, and yet many couples leave it until the last minute. Here are the questions that, in my opinion, you should ask any DJ before hiring them (myself included).

Do you work alone or with a team?

I work alone: I handle the sound, the lighting and the set from start to finish. That means the DJ you meet at the planning meeting is the same person who'll be behind the decks on the wedding day, with no last-minute surprises.

What equipment do you bring and who sets it up?

Ask whether the sound and lights are the DJ's own or subcontracted, and who handles setting them up and adapting them to the venue (sound for a garden isn't the same as sound for an indoor hall).

How do you put the set together?

A good wedding DJ doesn't just play a fixed playlist and leave it at that: they adapt the set live depending on how the dance floor reacts, leaving room for your must-play songs and avoiding the ones you absolutely don't want.

What happens if the party runs long?

It's worth knowing in advance whether an extra hour can be booked on the spot, and under what conditions.

Is the quote fixed or tailored?

I don't work with fixed published rates: every wedding is different (guests, venue, timing, extras like the crazy hour or CO2) and the quote is adjusted to what you need, not the other way around.

If you'd like to talk about your wedding, tell me the date, the venue and the number of guests and I'll put together a tailored proposal.
