How to choose a country estate or masía for your wedding in the Baix Empordà
The Baix Empordà and the whole Costa Brava are full of beautiful masías and country estates for getting married, and new options keep popping up every year. I'm not going to give you a ranking, because every venue changes management, conditions and condition over time, and I'd rather not tell you anything I can't confirm at the time of your wedding. What I can give you, after setting up equipment at so many different venues in the area, is a checklist of what's really worth asking before you book.
Power supply
Ask how many amps are available and where the electrical panels are. Many old masías have wiring designed for the house itself, not for a sound system, lighting, catering kitchen and bar all running at the same time. If the wiring is limited, a generator needs to be arranged, and that's something worth knowing months in advance, not the week of the wedding.
Music hours and local regulations
Every municipality has its own rules on hours, and in many cases the venue already has a time limit agreed with the town hall or the neighbours. Ask for the exact time the volume needs to come down or the music needs to end, because that shapes how I plan the whole night.
Space for the dance floor
An open garden with no clear limits is not the same as a porch or a room with a set capacity. Ask for the real square metres set aside for the party, because the sound power and the number of speakers needed depend on that.
If the ceremony is in a different space
Many masías have a garden or a specific area for the ceremony, separate from where the banquet and the dancing happen afterwards. If that's the case, both spots need sound, sometimes with equipment moved in between, so it's worth knowing in order to plan the timings properly.
Access and equipment load-in
Ask whether there's vehicle access close to where the equipment gets set up, or whether gear has to be carried by hand over a long distance (fairly common in charming masías with tricky access). It won't change the final result, but it does affect how much set-up time needs to be allowed.
Nearby accommodation for the supplier team
If the venue is somewhat out of the way, ask whether there's accommodation nearby for suppliers working late, especially if the wedding is in high season and the surrounding area fills up fast.
If you already have a venue booked, or you're weighing up a few, tell me about the space and the conditions and I'll tell you what we'll need in terms of sound and lighting so everything runs smoothly on the day.
