What order the songs play in at a wedding (and why it matters)
One of the questions I get asked most by couples is: "so how do you decide what plays at each moment?" There's no fixed playlist that works for every wedding, but there is a logic to the order that I repeat almost every time, because it works.
Ceremony: from calm to celebration
I always start with something calm for the guests' arrival, raise the tone slightly for the couple's entrance, and save the most emotional songs for the ring exchange and the vows. The exit, on the other hand, can already sound more joyful: the whole register changes there.
Cocktail hour: background, not the main event
During the cocktail hour, the music has to accompany without taking over, because people are talking and reconnecting with each other. It's a mistake to raise the volume or the energy too soon: it's not the moment yet.
Entrance to the banquet: the first energy peak
This is where I do raise the intensity, with a joyful song that signals the festive part of the night is starting. It's a clear shift in register from the cocktail hour.
During dinner: hold steady, don't launch
I lower the intensity a little again so people can talk at the table, but without going back to the calm tone of the cocktail hour. It's a middle ground.
First dance and opening of the dance floor
The couple's first dance marks another turning point: after that song, the floor opens up for everyone and the energy really starts to climb.
The rest of the night: rising in waves, not in a straight line
From that point on, I don't keep raising the energy non-stop, because people get tired. I alternate waves of a packed dance floor with slightly calmer moments (and that's where extras like the crazy hour or the surprise dance fit well, working as a peak within the night rather than as the closer).
The final stretch
For the end of the party, I usually save the songs that I know, from experience with each couple, are going to get everyone onto the dance floor at once, closing out the night at the highest possible energy.
